Gluteus / Abductor
By Lois Manzella Marchitto
This is the largest muscle in your body
You may already know that the gluteus maximus are the two largest muscles in the human body, so it makes sense we would highlight them again.
Did you also know they, along with your abductor muscles, make up a large part of the appearance, shape and function of the hips?
It’s important that both men and women work to strengthen this area.
Strong muscles in the glutes/abductors are not just important for how you look in your clothes, they are also key to your overall posture and stability, and possibly avoiding arthritis in your lower joints later in life.
Back, hip, knee and even ankle problems can stem from weakness in the gluteus and abductor muscles. Pain or tightness can arise once you begin a workout routine if you do not have a well-rounded plan that includes this area, especially if it has been some time since you last worked out.
Some exercises that are beneficial are squats, lunges, hip abductors using a band and side leg raises.
Whether you are trying to tone or gain strength, you will benefit from doing this more often.
